CHARACTER INTERPRETATION

» Appearance:

Ward is a Caucasian male, standing at about 6’3”, with short dark black-brown hair and dark brown eyes. His age is around 32 years old, and he’s built lean and tall, with years of combat training leaving him in excellent physical shape. He’s often seen wearing dark clothing, and a leather jacket. Occasionally he also wears a suit.

» Orientation:

Heterosexual. Ward only shows romantic interest in women throughout the show, going from a purely sexual relationship with agent Melinda May, to a more romantic one with Skye. Though he doesn’t outwardly flirt, his comfort zone is still clearly with women, seeing as during a mission he was supposed to seduce a male security guard and found himself asking for help after being unable to do so.

As far as romantic relations go however, it should be noted that Ward holds romance and sex at a fairly low standard, his work coming before most anything. The exception to this is Skye, whom Ward develops and almost unhealthy obsession/love for.

» Personality:

"There's a wolf in the herd."

When first introduced, Grant Douglas Ward comes off as a serious, level-headed man with a talent for his job as a SHIELD agent. He's a Specialist, brought into Coulson's team for both his skills as an agent, and in hopes that the teamwork will smooth our his "rougher edges." And that's the gist of Ward; rough edges. With a temper to watch out for, Ward is a war machine in his own right when it comes to being an agent. He always puts the mission before anything else, and it's that trait which both defines him as strong, but also as someone in need of change. Ward follows a fairly ruthless set of morals, where wrong and right often blur, and he's often alright with making decisions that other people might have trouble with. Still, behind this he offers a fairly decent reasoning; a lot of the driving force comes down to protecting people, seeing as Ward beings to open up about his feelings towards his fellow SHIELD teammates over time, admitting to feeling helpless when they get hurt or into trouble, and that it should be he who keeps them all safe.

Other than starting to open up about how he views things, Ward also grows a little softer during his time with SHIELD. He develops something close to a sense of humor, capable of making fun of himself and others, some of the earlier seriousness gone. Mostly this is due to Skye, who keeps poking and prodding at Ward, pushing him to open up and lighten up. The rest of the team helps considerably too once Ward begins to spend time with them. He starts to care about them and their safety, finds himself worried about them and a lot more willing to bend the rules somewhat to see the mission done in a way that might have differed from how he would have acted before.

Their group mentality tightens and strengthens, so to speak, and Ward is affected just as they all are.

Of course, he still takes his job very seriously, and the changes aren't as drastic as they are with the others. Ward is still one of the more cold headed members of Coulson's team along with May. Though he develops into someone more open, it's still clear that he struggles with emotions a lot. The turbulence caused with clashing feelings and his orders often lead to an inner turmoil.

This is of course, the person Ward portrays to SHIELD, and not entirely his true nature.

"Yeah, that straight version of you is something else; I don’t even think Romanoff can pull that one."

It is later revealed that Ward is incredibly adaptable. Working with John Garrett, a Hydra Agent, Ward infiltrated SHIELD and became a member of Coulson's team under orders from Garrett to do so. There, he portrayed the man just described perfectly, and no one suspected a thing about his true alliance. While his persona wasn't entirely fake, it's still a mask and something that softened his real nature which is a whole lot more black and white. Ward is ruthless as he is capable, willing and able to do anything based on his loyalty to Garrett, to whom he claims he owes everything. This includes turning on his former SHIELD team.

While he is direct and ruthless in his actions, some of that past interaction with SHIELD still lingers, as he is unable to directly kill Fitz or Simmons when ordered to do so. Still, he does eject them into the ocean from a plane. So while he might be willing to do the job, he goes about it in a way that he himself is comfortable, which is a drastic change from what we learn of how he's normally been under Garrett's control. Before, Ward was simply an extra pair of hands for Garrett, and alright with being so. His personality is suppressed at best, hidden underneath layers and layers of duty, loyalty and orders. Who Ward truly is, at his very essence is somewhat of a mystery-- of if he's anyone at all. Garrett's influence in his life started at a fragile, early stage, so Ward has never quite developed himself as a person, instead turning into what Garrett wanted from him. Perhaps what we see of Ward as he is with SHIELD is who he could have been had he never been in contact with Garrett to begin with.

Some hints point towards this being slightly the case, as once Garrett is removed from the picture, Ward is left without that guiding light he's been following for many years. It's then that he begins to find himself, though the results are confused and muddled at best. Torn between his odd, obsessive and affectionate feelings towards Skye, and the cold, hard brutality that shaped him into Garrett's blade, Ward's own personality is a mess of someone ruthless but perhaps capable of caring.

This idea, he especially latches onto Skye, whom becomes his number one target to help. He finds it his own mission to make sure Skye meets her father, and despite how clearly she distrusts him, he still fights to see to it that his promises to her are kept. His love for her is deep and important to him, though he isn't vocal about it, and it's perhaps the one, strong link he has to the person he was when he was with SHIELD. Along with this, he does also seem to regret what he did to Fitz and Simmons, too, especially after seeing how it left Fitz.

At the end of the day, Ward is a man made of fractured, broken morals, shaped by a hard, traumatic past, and made into someone who values loyalty to a fault. He is a conman, and a warrior, but perhaps there is still some sort of hope for him.

[ an island run by the power of sex. there’s something even ward hasn’t heard in all of his years running around the globe on missions of varying levels of both weird and dangerous. but rather than stand around and question it, he takes the facts that are presented to him, storing them away for analysis later. sex hardly scares him, and is nothing to panic over. right now, his biggest worry removing himself from said island, and reuniting himself with the rest of his shield teammates.

ward appears calm once the feed clicks on, his face carefully neutral despite the bruising and large, still bloody gash over the side of his face. ]

This is Agent Ward with SHIELD. If anyone has information or the location of Agent Coulson or Agent Garrett, please get in contact. Agent May, Skye— you, too.

[ or anyone. he’ll take fitz or simmons at this point, too. there’s the quietest sigh, something telling him he’s not going to get in contact with anyone, not on this frequency, alien as it is.

so, maybe he should tackle another subject. ]

From what I understood, this place is called Atia, correct? As far as cults go, this one is pushing it with creativity. [ he tugs lightly at his collar. ] The touch of control is nice, make sure everyone stays in line.

[ needless to say, ward can’t wait to get the hell out of here. ]

Ward dreams.

The air around him is soft, it’s warmth and it’s light. He feels good— or rather, he simply feels where he normally doesn’t allow himself to. In the dream, his guards are all down, those walls long since broken and shredded into something nonexistent, and he is simply himself. He is the person he might have once been if his life hadn’t taken a darker turn long ago, and for now, he embraces it. The warmth bubbles, turns into something hot and low in his gut, something which sparks. It makes him want in a way Ward doesn’t remember wanting before, pushing him to act.

The sensation guides him, has him reaching for that phantom body beside him; soft skin, light curves, and long, dark brown hair. He’d recognise her anywhere, from her soft scent to the way she smiles like the world isn’t quite as terrible as he knows it to be. It aches inside him, how badly he wishes to protect her from it all, to keep that light inside of her going.

Grant reaches out, the palm of his hand over the side of Skye’s face—

And wakes up.

It’s a jolting sensation, going from the warmth, the love, to staring up at an unfamiliar ceiling. Reality crashes down round him, and he’s up, rolling out of bed with practiced ease until his feet hit the floor and he’s away from the bed. The fact that he’s completely nude doesn’t phase him, though the collar around his neck gets a tentative touch… None of this makes sense, but panic doesn’t rise in his chest. Instead, Ward gives the entire room a quick study, noting the particular style it mimics, then traces the steps he remembers taking before waking up here. None of it leads to this— he doesn’t remember ever stepping foot into this room.

All he remembers is the vague, lingering dream, and the warmth he’d been forced to give. Admittedly, his skin still tingles from excitement, the arousal— A shake of his head, Ward forces it all away with cold brutality. Dreams are a waste of time, something to be forgotten as echoes of the far corners of the mind.

It’s then that he catches sight of the phone-like device on a nearby table. Stepping over, the thing is light in his hands as he turn it over, then switches it on. Time to figure out exactly who is captor is, and how he’s going to leave.
